PWANI: ARTS & CULTURE FIELD STUDIES PROGRAM

In Development ... :

Are you an artist / educator / social practice maker interested in exploring the Swahili Coast from a social justice lens? Are you interested in writing to reflect as you travel? Read on:

PWANI: Arts & Culture Field Studies is a two-week program for international artists, writers, educators, arts educators and cultural workers, conducted in English in Zanzibar, United Republic of Tanzania, East Africa.

PWANI introduces participants to the dynamic arts and cultural life of Unguja (Zanzibar) through walking tours, group dialogues and workshops, site visits and excursions. Designed to promote critical thinking and open dialogue on arts and culture, the program is built around a series of seminars and workshops led by a team of experienced Zanzibari and and international artists, writers and educators. Participants meet daily for individual and group discussions, writing assignments and presentations, as well other activities in and around Zanzibar. The first week will be spent in Stone Town, Zanzibar, the island's World Heritage capitol, learning about the politics of arts and culture. The second week will be spent in Bwejuu, Zanzibar, learning about coastal, spiritual, political and ecological considerations that impact arts and culture.

PWANI provides an exciting platform for artists, writers, educators and cultural workers who want to critically analyze culture and politics through a creative and artistic lens while developing new ideas. We stress the importance of program content, dialogue, writing and reflection as key features of this program.
